A CBC article today quoted the Director of Building Regulations from the National Research Council (the body currently updating the National Farm Building Code), as stating that the committee members are: “not looking at the protection of the animals in the building, they’re looking specifically at protection of occupants of the building.” This is exactly what the province of Manitoba did when we lobbied it to better protect farmed animals with its revised farm building codes. Rather than recognizing that animals are sentient beings, the new provincial standards simply required lit EXIT signs for human occupants. We fear this is exactly the road the federal government is going down and it is unacceptable. Stand with Canada’s farmed animals – provide comments on media coverage of barn fires and share our petition with friends and family. Canada’s animals deserve better.
